I don't know about you but as soon as the temperature drops all I can think about is getting a big cup of piping hot, hot chocolate.
The good news is that there are some cracking ones in Dublin and we've ranked them in order of the best to the verrrrry best.
All you have to do now is grab a mate and start working your way through the list during the winter.
Heck, do them all before Christmas, and then do them again.
Eating chocolate is amazing but drinking it is ever better...
10. InterContinental Dublin
You are going to pay a bit more given that this is one of the nicer hotels in the city but a drink this special is worth spending a little extra on.
An absolute treat that will leave you savouring every drop and possibly even thinking about ordering a second one.
9. Fallon And Byrne
Fallon & Bryne never disappoints with their food offerings; we're huge fans of their deli and restaurant.
A happy discovery has been their hot chocolate made with high quality Valrhona chocolate.
This is just the thing to cheer you up on a cold or rainy day.
8. The Bald Barista
Have been making great coffee way before it became trendy to drink coffee in this city. They also do a mean tea but their hot chocolate is the big surprise and absolutely to die for.
7. Brother Hubbard / Sister Sadie
If you find yourself searching high and low for hot chocolate that could change your life for the better, then your quest has stopped my friend.
Brother Hubbard and Sister Sadie, have gone and won full marks for most chocolate-y hot chocolate in both North and South Dublin – offering something that manages to be super-rich while not overly sweet. A perfect balance.
It's served with a little jug of hot chocolate milk, and a mug of thick rich liquid chocolate which you mix yourself, sip and fall for. A deserved winner for sure.
6. Butlers
Any chocoholic worth their salt will be well familiar with the delicious hot chocolates that Butler's café put together. You have loads of choice here whether you want a white, milk or dark hot chocolate, you can even order your hot chocolate with a chilli, mint or coconut twist!
You also get a little chocolate of your choice with your order. Thankfully they have loads of locations around the city, you can even get your fix in Dublin airport… The only way to cheer yourself up as your board a red eye!
5. Clemont And Pekoe
Thankfully, as well as the top quality coffees and teas that they are renowned for, they also have hot chocolate on the menu to satisfy your sweet tooth.
Swirl a block of handmade chocolate into a cup of frothy milk, take a seat at the window, gaze out at South William Street and watch the world go by.
4. Brick Alley Cafe
Known as having one of the best hot chocolate selections in Dublin, Brick Alley is a Temple Bar hot spot with bangin' music playing constantly.
And most importantly, the product itself is sublime.
3. Accents Coffee & Tea Lounge
Accents is a hidden gem on Stephen's Street with hot chocolate that deserves to be Dublin-famous.
Upon ordering, you get a choice of white, milk or dark (or a mixture of all three). You're then presented with a mug of hot milk and you have the choice to pour in however many choc chips you see fit.
Also, downstairs has super comfy couches and beanbags. Dreamy.
Pop into Drury Street and be prepared to get a cup of what heaven tastes like. Unreal.
1. The Sweetest Thing
The Sweetest Thing is technically a coffee shop on Bachelor's Walk – even though it's so much more than just coffee – that frequently causes quite a stir for their 'out-there' inventions.
If you want to try the best, order 'The Sweetest Thing' chocolate and you will not be disappointed.
We’re in the final countdown. Yes, we have speculated whether this 20 year old trend is slowly dying, perhaps evident by the fact there aren’t more cafés whipping up pumpkin spice and everything nice on this list, but basic as it may be, it’s a celebration of autumn in my eyes, and I can’t help but […]
Dublin is glutted with literary magazines. They’re ten a penny; if today’s penny is actually €15 each. In 2017 Justine Carbery wrote in The Irish Independent “literary journals proved to be constant stars in a fluctuating market. Ireland, with its rich history of independent literary magazines, finds itself in rude health today with many new […]

From refreshing newbs to reliable classics Despite the increasingly adverse trading conditions for service in Dublin, we’ve never had such strong restaurant offerings. Not even at the peak of the Celtic Tiger did we have such a plethora of passionate food creatives doing bits and making waves. So to help you navigate the best of […]

(and Always) It’s never been more vital to support Queer-Owned Spaces in Dublin. Put your money where your morals are as often as you can. As someone who has worked in hospitality, I know that the people who run our bars, restaurants, and cafés shape the atmosphere more than the decor or the playlist ever […]
No More Paddywhackery: On July 24th in New Orleans, Irish House Will Showcase a New Era of Irish Hospitality and Innovation If you’re Irish, you know that home is a complicated place. You’ll also know there’s a specific kind of awkwardness you feel walking into an Irish bar abroad. It’s an itch of embarrassment you […]
Move fast, this weather won’t be around forever. As Ireland revels in its mini-heatwave and we continue to hear stories about it being hotter here than Malaga, Benidorm and everywhere in between, you might be wondering where to head this weekend for a cute lunch al fresco. Well don’t worry sun worshipper, we’re here to […]
