Capel Street institution Goodwins to close after 50 years in business

The end of an era

Capel Street has seen plenty of changes over the last few years, and no doubt the closure of Goodwins musical instruments shop is one of them. The team behind the music shop will be pulling the shutters of 134 Capel Street for the last time in the coming weeks. Posting on Facebook, Managing Director, Liam Carroll wrote "with both gratitude and sadness we announce that we are closing our store and retiring from business after a long history," adding, "As we prepare to say goodbye, we want to extend our deepest thanks to everyone who has walked through our doors over the years."

The team will be hosting a celebratory clearance sale over the coming weeks, with lots of great deals on all guitars, equipment and accessories both in-store and online, which is "our way of expressing our thanks for your loyal custom down the years".

Several customers expressed their sadness that the shop would be closing, with one person writing, "I bought my first electric guitar (an Encore Strat) here in 1991 and recently my son’s first guitar and many packets of flat wound strings in between. There was always a lovely atmosphere of courtesy and love for guitars and music in Liam’s shop and it will be impossible to replace." While another who bought their first guitar in Goodwins at 17 wrote, "Very sorry to hear this lads you've been part of my life for years and I'll sadly miss you and the banter the joy you've brought not binky to me but every single person who had had the pleasure of walking through those doors thank you for everything from my heart I'll miss you".

Described as a "guitarists haven" the family-run shop also has a range of keyboards and Irish/folk instruments to suit everyone's taste.
