This Dubliner Had Some Unmerciful Revenge For Ex-Girlfriend Who Broke Up With Him

You may or may not have known about a certain 'Speaking Clock' that retired for good on Monday.

Personally, I never heard anyone talking about the 'Speaking Clock' but it was a service by Eircom - now Eir - that if you rang the number 1191 number, you were greeted with a message stating: "At the signal it will be", followed by the time.

Now, why anyone would ring up looking for the time at any stage considering we've always had watches and clocks is beyond me but each to their own.

Regardless, lack of calls to the service - which once racked up millions of dialler each year - meant that the decision was made to close it for good.

Adrian Kennedy & Jeremy Dixon were discussing the matter on 98FM on Tuesday and even managed to get ahold of the man behind the voice of the clock who even gave it one last announcement before signing off.

Apparently, dialling 1191 was as expensive as ringing another landline and Jeremy admitted to clocking up a phone bill of €500 when he was younger, much to the dismay of his mother.

But it was a caller into the show who took the spotlight from the speaking clock when he retold a story involving himself and an ex-girlfriend.

He started by saying that this girl who he dated almost 20 years ago broke up with him and although he didn't say how, it sounded like he was still very bitter about it so we'd say it ended badly.

Anyway, they must have been serious enough too because he had a key for her house and knew that in a few week's time she'd be heading on holidays for three weeks.

"It's breaking and entering or whatever you'd call it but the day she left I used the key to sneak into her house, dialled the speaking clock's number and left the phone off the hook.

"Then, about two and a half weeks later, I returned to the house and put the phone back on the hook. Several weeks after that I got a phone call from my ex saying she'd just received a bill from the speaking clock for thousands of euro," he said while he began to laugh.

We'd love to know what the ex did that was so bad that he felt the need to exert that sort of revenge.
