Move Over, Phibsboro – Stoneybatter Is Now One Of The ’50 Coolest Neighbourhoods In The World’

James Fenton

Last year, the people of Phibsboro rejoiced when the area was named by Time Out magazine as one of the 50 coolest neighbourhoods in the world. Well, whatever it is that cool people do instead of rejoicing. Shrugged their shoulders or something.

Today, the 2019 edition of the same list has been unveiled and it’s not great news for the Dublin 7 village. In the words of Abe Simpson, it appears that Phibsboro used to be with it but then they changed what ‘it’ was and now Stoneybatter is the place to be.

It has to be said, the compilers of the list didn’t look too far when deciding which of the capital’s areas would knock Phibsboro off its perch. In the newest list, the Stoneybatter is ranked at number 40, with the blurb stating ‘the past year has seen a string of great new openings, from vegan cafés to hot new bars, challenging other neighbourhoods vying for the crown (we’re looking at you, Phibsborough).’

Yikes, talk about throwing shade. Tips of the cap are given to Stoneybater mainstays such as The Belfry as a place to drink and Grano for getting some grub.

The piece goes on to say that the area is ‘the go-to spot for new eateries, and its local pubs and rock bars are the city’s hidden gems. Plus it’s not very touristy, which is nice.’

That might change if it keeps getting included in lists like this. For what it’s worth, Arroios in Lisbon takes the top spot this year and you can read the full list here.
