A relatively quiet weekend at the Irish box office this Bank Holiday weekend, with one J. Bond looming large ahead of Spectre’s Monday release.
Before then though, here’s what’s worth checking out down your local cineplex. If you're not a fan of scary movies, you're probably better off staying at home...
27th - 31st October, Light House Cinema.
Trying to detox in the run up to the inevitable carnage of all Hallow’s eve next weekend? Why not scare yourself straight with a good horror flick!
Admittedly, the ‘horror’ status of some of the Light House’s selections is certainly debatable, they do represent a decent overview of where the genre was at in the ‘90s.
From revered classics like Silence of the Lambs to the high-camp childhood memory that is Hocus Pocus, there’s something here for everyone, from genre diehards to casual movie-goers, culminating in a Scream 1+2 double bill party on the 31st. ‘90s Horror garb, essential.

From directors Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, Mississippi Grind co-stars Ryan Reynolds and the inimitable Ben Mendelsohn (Starred Up, Netflix’s Bloodline) as two poker players who team up for a road trip, gambling their way through the south towards New Orleans.
Judging from the glowing reviews and trusting Mendelsohn’s midas touch, the Reynoldsaissance looks set to continue, the man once best known as Van Wilder steadily making his mark on the American indie scene.
Thursday 22nd-Sunday 26th October, IFI Dublin.
More horror anyone? Be warned, this one’s not for the squeamish, with Horrorthon proudly playing host to some of the more leftfield, purist horror films of both the old guard and the new.
Amongst the new blood are Eli Roth’s long delayed The Green Inferno and Irish Sundance favourite The Hallow, while a screening of Dracula A.D pays tribute to the recently departed Christopher Lee.
