Into love and also into history?

Well have we got the Valentine’s Day surprise for you. Richmond Barracks is all day filling out hearts with love, joy and everything in between as today they’re telling the tale of the famous rebel love story of Grace Gifford and Joseph Mary Plunkett.

The two famously wed just hours before his execution, following his involvement in the 1916 Easter Rising.

After the Rising, on May 3, her brother-in-law Thomas MacDonagh was shot along with Pádraig Pearse and Thomas Clarke by firing squad. Grace then heard that Joseph was to be shot at dawn, so she bought a ring in a jeweller’s shop in Dublin city centre and, with the help of a priest, persuaded the military authorities to allow them to marry.

She and Joseph were married, that night, in the chapel of Kilmainham Gaol, a few hours before he was executed.

Their love story remains one of the most sorrowful tales of the Rising, as well as a shining beacon of hope amidst the chaos.

And today you can hear all about it in Richmond Barracks. What a way to celebrate love. Find out more information on their website
