This week, we’ve focused in on footwear – from stylish sneakers to fashionable flats – and from what we can see, Dubliners like their shoes to make a statement. Whether you’re a trainer-loving trendster or prefer to sport a more subtle shoe, picking the right footwear for the unexpected Irish summer heat can be a tricky topic. Check out what the people of Dublin stepped out in this week, and then our top three must-have footwear choices for the summer months.

For The Lads

Runners: You can’t really ever go wrong with some slick sneakers, and this season it’s a case of the brighter the better when it comes to your feet. If you’re feeling adventurous, then sport a pair of loud hi-tops in a colour palette of your choosing, or log on to NikeiD and customise a pair of your very own.

The Summer Brogue: For a dressier alternative to a pair of trainers, the lace-up Oxford brogue is an instant fashion hit. No longer reserved for the skinny-jeaned hipster, the leather brogue easily transitions from workwear to smart casual.

Canvas Plimsolls: The canvas plimsoll is a great summer shoe option thanks to its light weight and breathability factor. Wear with jeans for daytime, or shorts for the beach.

For The Girls

Stylish Sandals: Heel haters everywhere will be delighted to hear that the ‘it’ shoe from the SS14 catwalks was the dressy flat. Make up for the lack of heel with a detailed embellishment or opt for an on-trend metallic that is as versatile an offering as brown leather.

Wedges: If you can’t bear the thought of going completely flat, then a summer wedge is the perfect combination of comfort and style. The higher the platform at the front of the shoe, the more support it will offer, so regardless of how high you want to go, pick a wedge that keeps your foot as flat as possible for maximum comfort. 

Runners: As with the fellas, women’s trainers are having a major fashion moment this summer. The key to making this look work is to keep the rest of your look similarly relaxed and casual (i.e. don’t team runners with your business power suit). For a subtle take on the trend, try a monochrome New Balance pair with your favourite skinnies, or if you’re feeling adventurous, go all out with some neon hi-tops and a summer dress.
