Fáilte Ireland will work with Google over the next three months to capture many of our country’s remotest and most beautiful spots which have not yet been photographed.
The Irish tourism organisation will borrow the Google Trekker as part of the search engine behemoth's ‘Trekker Loan Programme’ to capture Street View imagery in remote places where a car can’t go. In the coming weeks, Fáilte Ireland will be capturing footage of many places people have not yet been able to see online.
The Trekker is a wearable backpack with a camera system on top that automatically captures images as it the wearer walks.
Fáilte Ireland will begin the process this week along the Wild Atlantic Way, bringing the Trekker to islands like Inishbofin, Achill, the Blaskets and Dun Aengus on Inish Mor, as well as other significant destinations such as Sliabh Liag, Croagh Patrick and Mizen Head.
Six out of ten visitors to Ireland last year cited the internet as an influence when choosing the country as a destination. Three quarters of visitors told us that they use the internet to plan their itinerary here before arriving [...] When finally captured and uploaded, we hope that millions worldwide get to explore very beautiful and attractive images of some of our remotest parts through Google Street View.
