It Looks Like This Popular Lunchtime Market Is Officially Closing

The Grand Canal food market saga rumbles on. 

The popular weekly gathering of 16 takeaway food stalls was originally ordered to cease in March after opposition from Dublin City Council as well as local businesses and residences. 

According to the Irish Times, the council had already refused permission for Waterways Ireland to carry on holding the market each Friday but a loophole was found that allowed the market to run for up to 30 days a year without planning permission. 

This week Waterways Ireland wrote to residents to tell them that the stalls will now be closing down:

“Subsequent to Dublin City Council’s decision to not grant planning permission for a market to operate at Percy Place, Waterways Ireland contacted the market operator and advised them to cease trading at this location."

Devastating news for those who love nothing better than munching international cuisine by the canal during this fine weather.
