New Safefood Report Shows Just How Many Calories Are In Indian Takeaway Meals

Apologies in advance if you had a delish Indian takeaway over the weekend...

A new report conducted by Ulster University and SafeFood has revealed just how many calories are in one Indian takeaway meal, and the results ain't pretty!

A typical Indian takeaway meal consisting of a starter, main course and pilau rice can contain over 2,287 calories - far more calories than an adult’s total daily requirements. In addition, some varieties of naan bread contain almost a third of an adult’s total daily calorie requirement.

The analysis for the 'What's In Your Indian Takeaway' report was conducted on 280 food samples from 36 Indian takeaways in Ireland.

From the looks of it we should be changing our takeaway habits!

However, if you feel like you can't go without a lovely Indian takeaway every now and then, the report also provides some tips on how to enjoy a healthier takeaway:

Consider Indian takeaway meals as an occasional food and one portion should ideally be shared between two people.

Choose boiled rice over pilau rice and share the portion of rice as the average portion provided enough for two people. Consider not eating both a portion of naan bread and rice, unless they are shared.

Avoid nibbling on poppadoms and associated dips – on average one portion of poppadoms contains over 100 calories alone.
