Since Taco Taco closed its doors on Friday we’ve been on the lookout for our new favourite Mexican haunt, and we think we’ve found it.
Cafe Azteca is in a pretty central spot on Lord Edward Street, just a few metres away from Christchurch Cathedral, but it’s so tiny you could easily walk right past.
It’s worth making the effort to track it down though, and get there early to make sure you nab a table.
Once you go in you’re greeted by friendly staff, many of whom are from Mexico and willing to chat about everything and anything.
The menu is authentic and might seem off-putting if you’re used to quick and cheap Tex-Mex fare, but stick it out.
For just a few extra euro you get a high quality, home made meal – and the portions are big.
We tried the simon simonazo burrito with Irish beef, swiss cheese, omacati salsa and guacamole and it was delish.

The opening hours are 12 to 8 Monday to Wednesday and 12 to 9 Thursday to Saturday.
