Gaff Goals: 6 Easy Ways To Make The Most Of Your Small Living Space

Not only is it officially back-to-college time but as we all know, a lot (actually most) of us are renting spaces that are moderate in size. 

So, whether you're a student or not, making the most of your living space is essential. 

You may not be able to swing a cat in your pad but we've enlisted the help of the GAFF Interiors crew to get some helpful tips and tricks to make your pokey space feel palatial. 

Ready? Here are six ways to make the most of your home sweet home. 

1. Storage

OK, first things first. You've got clothing, books, maybe an exercise ball and a big pile of other stuff mounting all around. One of the biggest issues in a small space is clutter and while we're not suggesting that you throw everything out and live like a monk, what we're saying is put your sh** away. 

There are so many handy ways to get your storage on from giant trunks to peg boards. Obviously IKEA is amazing, but here are some other suppliers that'll help. Vacuum pack clothes that you're not wearing and use the inside of your wardrobe doors to store shoes and accessories.

Use every possible nook and cranny to tidy your belongings away and you'll have given yourself headspace and a few extra feet of floor space in no time at all. 

2. Switch it up

If you're investing in a few furniture pieces for your pad, think outside of the box, people. 

Instead of getting a bed, get a day bed that you can flip into a sofa for day time chilling. Flip-chairs and folding tables are your best friend, and they don't have to be hideous either (see below). 

For things like lamps, go for long, lean and easy to move. The last thing you need is for your whole bedside table to be taken up by a clunky reading light. Two small tables are better than one massive one and if you do need a big desk, use the underneath part as storage for books and folders, gym gear etc. 

3. Keep it cool 

Colour scheme is very important. Don't be scared! It's not a big deal, but we do suggest that you keep your room as pattern-free and neutral as possible. 

Not only do caramels, creams, light pinks and mint greens make you a calmer human being, they also create the illusion of space. So no zig-zag patterned bed spreads or cushions and crazy printed wallpaper - keep it simple. Think Scandi chic for inspo. 

4. Mirror, mirror 

Mirrors are magical things that add so much light and space to your space. Take a look at these beauties for some ideas. Add a mirror on the largest wall and it'll give the illusion of double the space. This tip is so easy, it's a no brainer. 

5. Let there be light 

Curtains are essential for keeping your rooms warm and cosy but when they are open during the day, make sure they don't block light. If it's possible, hang your curtains directly from the ceiling, rather than from the top of the window, which will add height to your space. This really works.

6. Shelf it 

Make the most of your room's height with floor to ceiling bookshelves - they'll help give the illusion of more space. Think long and lean as opposed to broad shelves. 

It's also a great way to decorate - add a plant, some photo frames and ornaments at eye level. It's not all about function, you want your space to be good looking too.
