While the lovely and romantic parts of your wedding day are all well and good, there’s one bit that the whole congregation is really looking forward to – the PARTY!
The dinner’s been eaten, the cake’s being wheeled out the door for later and the guests are getting nicely pissed, so of course everyone is gearing up for a good auld dance.
So it’s massively important that the music is a) not going to be shite; b) going to suit the vibe of your wedding; and c) not be delivered by a cheeseball of a DJ.
And with that in mind, here are seven of the best wedding DJs in the country:
1. In Crowd Wedding Music
DJ Jim the Enchanter posits himself as a “classy alternative musical solution” for your wedding party. And I can vouch for that – he played at our wedding and went down a storm.
Jim’s unique in that he has a massive selection of vinyl record he plays on real turntables, banging out indie classics, 70s funk, 80s hits, soul tunes and classic floor fillers.
And he’s a lovely chap to deal with too; all communication was easy and breezy as he helped us come up with our dream party playlist.
2. Velvet DJs
Dermot of Velvet DJs is a self-professed music boffin, with a vast music library to cater for whatever kind of party you’re after, be it a traditional affair or a full on rave.
Dermot is the resident DJ in Dublin’s Fallon & Byrne and has spun the decks in some of the city’s best bars and venues including Odessa, The Grand Social, The Button Factory and Gravity Bar in the Guinness Storehouse.
So, you know, he’s good like.
3. Cian Ó Ciobhain
Cian has been DJing for over 20 years, presenting An Taobh Tuathail on RTE RnaG since 1999, so you can be guaranteed he knows his stuff.
Cian spins for couples who want something different from the norm, playing the likes of indie, disco, soul, funk, house, hip-hop, indie, punk and reggae, among others.
And if you’re that way inclined, he can also drop in some techno or electronica. Plus, he uses a Funktion 1 sound-system, which he says is the “Rolls Royce of PAs” used in all the best clubs in the world. Tasty.
4. Alternative Wedding DJ
Catering for offbeat couples who want something unique and different from the norm, Alternative Wedding DJ is the perfect example of the more contemporary style of wedding vendor. While they’re not music snobs – recognising a little cheese has its place – they do say they won’t “play anything that has its own dance”. (Yes, the Las Ketchup gals’ ears are burning.)
And they also say they’ll use the mic when necessary, but won’t “overuse it like the stereotypical DJs of old”.
Expect a ‘smorgasbord’ of quality tunes spanning rock, punk, indie, funk, soul, hip hop and electronica.
5. DJ Aidan Kavanagh
Resident DJ at Dublin’s Sugar Club for the past 11 years, and a regular DJ at Electric Picnic and Body and Soul, Aidan is well used to getting a crowd going.
Couple
that with the fact he’s played over 800 weddings (so basically every wedding, ever) cementing a reputation for
his ‘danceable’ sets, you can pretty much guarantee the floor will be full for
the night.
And on top of this, he’s an expert at DJ only weddings, so if you’re
on a tight budget you can veto the band.
6. DJ Tommy Elliott
Voted “Wedding DJ
of the Year” three times this year, Mayo DJ Tommy Elliot definitely has the
creds.
Priding himself on professionalism, Tommy will plan the vibe of party
with you prior to the wedding to ensure it goes off without a ‘hitch’.
See what
we did there? Hitch? Hitched? As in you got… oh never mind.
7. Darragh O’ Dea
As a professional
DJ for over 20 years, playing some of Dublin’s legendary clubs like Hollywood
Nights and Lautrex, Darragh O’Dea has amassed a huge collection of music.
He provides
heaps of package options, from a couple of hours to – in the words of good old
Lionel – all night long.
He also supplies a pretty nifty little system where
you can create a playlist of your favourite tunes on his website, and on the day,
he’ll spin them. Handy!
