1916 REWIND: Gunfire On The Streets, Several Buildings Occupied And One Reported Dead

All this week we're bringing the 1916 Rising to life as it happened with historical reports from the fateful week, day by day and hour by hour. For more reports, see 1916 Live.

1.05pm, Easter Monday

THERE IS LIVE GUNFIRE IN DUBLIN CITY CENTRE.

No doubt about it now – multiple reports from several parts of the city, live gunfire and possible machine-gun fire at Dublin Castle, with one unconfirmed report of a dead body in that area.

RIC officers are pulling back from the quays and several major buildings appear to be under the control of Volunteers or Citizen Army. AVOID CITY CENTRE AT ALL COSTS.

No news yet from the Devolved Assembly officials in Leinster House or the First Minister’s residence in the Phoenix Park. We have contacted their press offices and a statement is expected shortly.

Here's what those on the street are saying

Stay safe, people.
