It’s hard to find a really good value Rioja these days, but this deliciously smooth and easy-drinking Tempranillo and Garnacha blend is vibrant and bursting with typical plum and strawberry fruit flavours. It balances good acidity with silky smooth tannins. Six months in American oak barrels gives a hint of vanilla and sweet spice complexity to the finish. This is a delicious, crowd-pleasing wine that would go down a treat at a family get-together.

We love hearing of family wineries and Famille Bougrier has been farming the Loire Valley for six generations, dating all the way back to 1885. This is a new arrival at O’Briens, made from the Sauvignon Blanc variety and is beautifully aromatic with red grapefruit and tropical fruit wafting from the glass. The palate is crisp and fresh with delightful acidity and a chalky minerality on the long finish. I could see this as an ideal match with a steaming bowl of fresh mussels.

Albariño is one of the trendiest grape varieties right now and if you haven’t tried it yet, this is a great value opportunity. Xovial comes from vineyards in Spain's wet northwest Galicia and has lip-smacking tropical flavours, greengage pear and refreshing citrus fruits. It has a lovely silky texture and a refreshingly crisp finish. Try this with oily fish or grilled chicken.

Ripasso wine comes from northern Italy and is made with some semi-dried grapes, adding deliciously rich and concentrated fruit flavours to the wine. This is sensational stuff with a silky smooth palate and ripe blackberry and dried cherry fruit flavours. It's full-bodied with a delightful balance between the super-smooth rich-fruited mouthfeel, and the refreshing acidity. A perfect pairing for grilled meats if you fancy firing up the BBQ.
5. Ortas Reserve, Côtes du Rhône, France

From one of the oldest cooperatives in the Southern Rhône, this unoaked red is made in a delicious upfront and juicy style with plenty of fruits of the forest, black olive tapenade and white pepper spice flavours. It's well balanced, with good acidity and soft tannins and is one of the best value Rhône wines we have ever tried.

Simon Waghorn and his family bought Astrolabe Wines outright to become a true family business last year. The family grow their grapes sustainably to preserve the beauty of their Marlborough estate. The grapes are harvested in the cool of the night to retain all that zippy fresh acidity and crisp citrus fruit flavours. The wine is wonderfully aromatic and bursting with passionfruit, lemongrass, gooseberry and citrus fruit flavours and a deliciously dry mineral finish. Lip-smackingly fresh and vibrant, this is real benchmark Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc.
