The Dublin 7s Rugby Festival is taking place on Saturday May 28 – and looks like a fantastic day out.
There will be a number of seven-a-side rugby games to watch and take part in throughout the day but while enjoying all things rugby helps, you certainly don’t need to be a fan to get the most out of the event.
The organisers are gathering the best in music, food, drink and entertainment for the occasion. Here’s why you need to attend:
1. The food and drink
We could pretend to be all about the sports, but let’s cut to the chase here.
On the menu will be everything from sticky BBQ food and doughy pizza to healthier options like salads and shakes. On top of that, a wide range of beers to wash it all down...
2. The eclectic mix of nationalities
The 12 international teams of pros and semi-pros taking part include Norway, Germany, and Jamaica as well as Samurai International from Japan – one of the world’s best rugby invitational teams.
And with a name like that, you’ll have to get behind them.
Throw Ulster, London Wasps, Biarritz and Italy into the mix and there should be supporters of a number of different cultures to mingle with.
3. Live entertainment
A devoted DJ stage spinning tunes all day AND live acts like Fat Man Scoop and Spring Break playing throughout the evening? Grand.
4. Sport on the big screen
If you're worried that you'll be missing a great weekend of sport by attending, let's put you at ease: you can watch the Pro 12 Final and Champions League Final on a cinema-sized screen at the festival. So you're not only catching the deciding matches, you're seeing them on a bigger screen than anywhere else in the city and you'll have the best atmosphere to boot.
5. Open Tag Rugby Tournament
Are you one of those people who watches Wimbledon and has the urge to get out on a court and play? Well then you'll love this: there will be a tag tournament prior to the main event held at Old Belvedere Rugby Club (a mere 800m from the main Donnybrook venue).
Those taking part will be given all-inclusive access to the festival and a chance to compete in the grand final on the Donnybrook pitch in front of masses of adoring fans.

6. There will be fancy dress, a bouncy castle and face-painting
No need to organise a babysitter as there will be entertainment for kids throughout the day.
After you’ve ‘supervised’ your little ones on the bouncy castle, why not take them off to get their (your) face painted in the guise of their (your) favourite animal/cartoon character/superhero?
7. Rugby 7s is now an Olympic sport
This summer’s Olympics in Rio de Janeiro will be the first time ever that rugby 7s has been on the card. This is the perfect opportunity to swot up and impress your mates in August.
