The weekend of Body & Soul and Sea Sessions are upon us, but if you haven't managed to find a way to either of these, there's no need to fortify yourself on the couch in your PJs, Dublin has plenty of interesting gigs to choose from!
From the experimental to the wistful, electric to acoustic, there's an intriguing range of sounds on offer in the capital. These events are the pick of the bunch.
Sophisticated and mythical are words used to describe Regis, a veteran experimental techno DJ who has helped shape the influential and unconventional Downwards label since 1993. This looks set to be a special gig and the presence of local maestro Sunil Sharpe adds a great dimension to the bill. If techno is your thing, you’re going to want to be on the Twisted Pepper’s dancefloor for this one.
Breathe – a fabulously talented seven-piece group formed from some of Ireland’s finest session musicians – will be showcasing their anticipated live performance of Pink Floyd’s masterful work. The set will feature several other Floyd classics, and visuals will form part of the performance. With The Sugar Club’s comfortable seating and theatre setting, this is a very tasty looking gig indeed.
More impressive home-grown electronic talent. The last twelve months have been a whirlwind for Galway native John Daly, as he played to crowds in some of the most respected clubs in the world including Berlin’s Panorama Bar and Paris’s Concrete. He returns to the capital for a special gig by similarly-minded Frank B. Pop in to Pygmalion on Friday to sample sumptuous blends of disco, deep house and techno.
This genre-bending six-piece from Brighton are renowned for their unpredictable sets and their live energy. Combined with the intimate setting of Whelans, this looks certain to a memorable concert. Expect an arresting combination of jangly guitar rock and hip hopm and pop culture samples.
After ten years of chart success and festival headline spots as part of Razorlight, Johnny Burrell has re-orientated his sound somewhat, bringing in saxophones and pianos to give his work a more ornate finish. With a new release on the way, Johnny seems to be settling in to his back to basics sound with his backing band, Zazou, and is excited about the upcoming tour.
