I spend all my free time out discovering new places, and with the Dublin economy beginning to boom again you could eat in a new restaurant pretty much every day of the week (if you had the cash!). While it's great to keep up with the new spots, I find I don't check back enough with the places I've raved about in the past. Some places have a strong start, but then fall off a cliff as consistency eludes them.
One of the places that I was probably the most complimentarty about in the early days of this site was Green Bench. The main reason being that I used to work about 100 yards from it, so I would eat there most days. It was stunning back in the day, but having not been there in over 2 years so I decided to check it out again - would it still be as good as I remembered?
Well, the first positive sign was the queue outside. That queue is there every single day of the week, time is precious and people don't waste just 20 minutes of their treasured lunch hour queueing for shit food.
The second signal indication that it was as good as when I first tried it two years ago, was that I then returned 4 times in the next week to get my lunch there. The sandwiches are as fresh, imaginative and vibrant as ever and they change all the time. The chicken is actual real roast chicken and about as far removed from that watered down shite you get in the big chain deli counters as you could imagine.
You'll get in and out of here in 10 minutes if you time it right. Midday is about best, but anything after that and you'll be competing with the swarms of young professionals in suits.
Then there are the doughnuts, the fucking doughnuts! These are little little clouds of heaven that have floated down to earth. Filled with jam, cream or even caramel. I'd do prison time to eat one of these daily and not gain any weight. But then again, when you taste these little morsels all thoughts about healthy eating will go out the window!
Many of you will know about Green Bench and wonder why the hell I am writing about it again..
Well this blog had 50,000 readers the last time I last wrote about them, and there are now over a million Lovin Dublin readers. I bring up the place in conversation with many, and they've never heard of it. Lunch is afterall a very local affair - grabbing a quick bite before legging it back to your desk. What I'd suggest is that you walk down here, get a taxi or even take a day off to try it!
If I only got to eat in Green Bench for the rest of my life for lunch I'd be a happy man indeed. Get in the queue, and prepare to have your entire day taken to the next level!
The food is always imaginative and constantly changing
The sun was shining, the ribbon was cut, and the tarmac was freshly poured – all was ready to go when I queued up among plenty of eager visitors to be one of the first to try out Emerald Park’s two new roller coasters, Na Fianna Force and The Quest. The two rides are part […]
The problematic portal opened back up on North Earl this week, and although we’re glad to see at least one Dublin project come to fruition (unlike the ones below), it seems everyone is still scratching their heads trying to figure out why exactly we need it. Whether you’re a lover or a hater of the infamous […]

Newly opened up the top of Ranelagh, this high-end bakery is a great addition to Dublin’s blooming bakery scene. Operating on a refreshing level of production and efficiency, we have no doubt that it will set the tone and up the stakes for others. Get prepared to get there early cos they sell out lippy-split […]

Scéal have really come into their stride in their first permanent home. If you’ve been here a while, you know the Lovin team’s borderline obsession with a certain bakery, one you used to only be able to find on a Thursday or Saturday morning at the Fumbally stables, between 10am and 1pm (although they rarely […]
We found ourselves standing in a queue at 11am on a Wednesday morning, so we knew the hype was real. Dublin loves a trend, as we know. Burritos, doughnuts, chicken wangs, small plates – we’re always ready to hop on the hot sauce laden bandwagon, whether it’s for burgers, or dumplings, froyo, or pastel de […]
The definition of a “feel-good” watch. Somewhere Out There You by playwright and screenwriter Nancy Harris premiered as part of Dublin Theatre Festival and is on a 6 week run at the Abbey – I was lucky enough to catch it on Monday evening, and unlike most of the plays that I have had the […]
