Ah, a few pints on Christmas Eve: the one night of the where we can completely and utterly put work out of our minds and enjoy spending a few guilt-free hours in total switched-off mode.
The perfect Christmas Eve pub is cosy, not too loud, and serves up whatever might tickle our festive fancy.
Here’s a few spots that will keep you warm, keep the drink flowing and the chat coming...
The beautiful warm red woods in this slightly old-timey pub make it incredibly cosy, plus it’s out of the way so you should be able to miss the big crowds.
It’s no coincidence that John Kavanagh’s The Gravediggers made it to the top of our list of best Guinness in Dublin.
It’s always surprising how quiet this place is, given how perfectly situated it is, surrounded by classic Christmassy sights like big beautiful Christ Church Cathedral, whose bellringers often frequent the pub along with lots of other artsy types.
It’s a pretty old-fashioned spot, with decor that feels a little overdue an upgrade, but that’s just part of its charm. Grab a little corner nook and settle yourself down for the evening.
Speaking of corner nooks, if you’re willing to head out of the city centre a little, head out Parkgate Street, try Ryan’s of Parkgate St.
It’s been around since 1886, and has lovely snugs at the back (originally where women were put to keep them away from the men!) where you can comfortably ensconce yourself for the evening and enjoy a great pin with some simply fantastic chips and steak.
John Fallon’s has basically become everyone’s point of reference for everything in D8:
“You’re looking for Francis St? Well, you know where John Fallon’s is, right?”.
Small, un-self-conscious and comfy, there’s always a lovely vibe at Fallon’s with brilliant toasties.
As it’s one of the best venues in town it can be easy to forget that Whelan’s is also one of the best pubs in town too.
What’s more is it has multiple spaces to suit your mood (try the Parlour especially), as well as great big open fires.
We featured this recently on our list of cosiest pubs, but it is well-deserving as another mention for Christmas Eve bevvies just for their insane decorations and tasty pub grub.

Usually we tend to think of the Nassau St or Temple Bar Porterhouse first, but the one in Glasnevin is huge and uniquely situated in a former garage. The Porterhouse North is always pleasantly buzzing so it’s perfect if you’re looking for a hit of festive ambience without the city-centre madness.
Plus if you’re planning on hanging about for the whole evening (which of course you are), you want a place that has lots of drink options: and these guys have a huge variety of craft beers and cocktails.
OK so technically not pints, but perfect if you feel like something a little unusual...
Variety is key again – check out some of their Christmassy drinks like the orange and cinnamon ‘Sherbet Sip” in the warm, red glow of this underground bar.
