Barry’s story

Scene: 2009.

The country was in the dumps, and I had an interview in an unnamed Dublin business park out the back arse of nowhere.

I arrived at what looked like a derelict building, and was instructed by a voice on the speaker to go to level 4 – and when I did, it looked like a scene from Wall Street. One guy was just there, doing jumping jacks.

I was brought to a small room by the general manager and his assistant. There was some general chit chat, after which he then passed me his mobile and told me to…

“Sell me the phone”.

I’m not really sure what I said next in the bemusement of it all, but he then grabs the phone from my hand, stands up and says: “You talk a lot of shit – you’re hired.”

He then threw a notepad at his assistant and told to take my details, and that I start Monday.

I didn’t take the job.
