Irish nurses could be the latest sector to go on strike.

The Irish Nurses And Midwives Organisation announced this evening that it will be balloting its members on the possibility of industrial action.

The union is demanding special recruitment in the sector, as well as accelerated restoration of pay for nurses.

RTÉ reports that the action would begin with a work-to-rule before moving on to one-day stoppages.

However, the strike is not expected to come into effect until early next year.
