After a record number of people slept rough in Dublin last month, over 200 new beds will be made available to the homeless before Christmas.
Pat Doyle, Chief Executive of the Peter McVerry Trust, spoke to Drivetime on RTÉ Radio One yesterday and said that there will be a bed available for every rough sleeper in Dublin by Christmas time.
Over the next month, 202 new beds will be made available although Doyle said that not all those will decide to take up a bed.
It was revealed that there was a record 184 people sleeping rough in Dublin on November 7 which was the highest number ever recorded in the capital.
Speaking on the radio show, he said:
"What we're saying now and what the Dublin City Council and the Dublin Region Homeless Executive are doing, in partnership with the voluntary organisations is, we're bringing in 202 new beds this side of Christmas.
"The majority will come in - there'll be some that'll be complex and we need to work extremely hard to get them in."
