Dublin City Council To Consider Anti Terror Attack Precautions On Grafton Street

Sarah

Dublin City Council is carrying out a risk analysis of the city to determine whether physical barriers, such as heavy bollards, are necessary in an attempt to prevent terror attacks in the capital.

The Journal reports that the council confirmed the analysis was underway after a spate of recent terror attacks across Europe involving the use of vehicles as a weapon.

Although Garreadai spokespeople have stated that an attack is “possible but unlikely”, fears for heavily populated areas in Ireland have still been raised.

A Dublin City Council spokesman stated to the TheJournal that:

Meetings have taken place between Dublin City Council and An Garda Siochana on this issue and a risk analysis of areas in the city centre is being undertaken to determine where any additional measures may be needed and the type and nature of any required interventions.

However, Ciarán Cuffe – Green councillor and chair of the Transportation Strategic Policy Committee for DCC says it wouldn’t be the best solution, calling the installation of bollards a “bottomless pit”, and that money should instead be spent on integrating people who have moved to Ireland.
