The Department of Transport has ordered 100 new energy-efficient DART trains.
This follows two recent orders for new DART trains, bringing the total invested by the Government in new electric-powered DART trains to approximately €670 million.
Minister for Transport Darragh O'Brien commented on the orders: "The rollout of these carriages will help ensure that we continue to provide a sustainable and reliable DART service in the years ahead, as we work to expand the DART network under the DART+ Programme."
The first order consisted of 95 carriages which will mainly enter service on the Dublin to Drogheda route in early 2027, with a second order of 90 DART carriages set to enter service from 2028.
This latest order of 100 carriages marks an investment of €173.9 million.
They will replace the original fleet, which has been in service on the coastal line since 1984.
Furthermore, these orders, made by Iarnród Éireann through the National Transport Authority (NTA) with global manufacturer Alstom, bring the number of ordered carriages to 285 or 57 five-carriage trains.
Chief Executive of the NTA, Anne Shaw, said: "These new trains will ensure DART continues to deliver sustainable transport along the corridor, improving the efficiency of the service and improving the reliability, accessibility and comfort of DART users."
