Great News – The Old Howth Trams Could Be Making A Comeback

kaylawalsh

The famous Howth trams were decommissioned and replaced by buses in 1959 – but they could soon be set to return.

A new study has been carried out into the viability of bringing back the trams and suggests several possible routes.

Local people are in favour of trams running between Howth Dart Station and the Summit pub, which would be handy for anyone planning to go for a walk around the cliffs.

There would be ten daily services using original restored trams, each carrying up to 73 passengers.

Unfortunately the project would require an initial spend of about €6.7m and would probably run at a loss, according to The Irish Times.

“If we get the right circumstances we could have a tram back in Howth,” said Councillor David O’Connor

“There is very good local support for it.”
