Ice Cream Van Used To Transport Injured Patient From Portmarnock Beach To An Ambulance

A local ice cream van owner helped come to the rescue after a person injured their leg and needed medical assistance at Portmarnock beach on Monday

Mark's ice cream van transported the patient from the beach to a Dublin Fire Brigade ambulance, who said the van was used because it was lighter than their ambulances, which may have gotten stuck in the sand.

Dublin Fire Brigade told the Irish Independent:

"Our ambulances are about seven tonnes and would possibly become stuck in the sand. The ice cream van owner offered to transport the patient in his lighter van. The patient was about one mile from the ambulance.

"Occasionally we would ask to use a suitable vehicle if one is to hand, but usually we would call the local coast guard ground unit, local life guards, or carry the patient with a fire crew. Whatever means are most effective for the best outcome of the patient."
