PIC: This 19th Century Definition Of A ‘Dublin Jackeen’ Is Absolutely Gas

Sarah

Have you ever been called a ‘Jackeen’?

To some peeps it simply means you’re a real Dub, a true-blue through and through, but to others it can be the one insulting word that causes them to go absolutely mental.

There’s a few different meanings behind this typically Irish name; the Oxford English Dictionary defines it as “a contemptuous designation for a self-assertive worthless fellow.” Oh, okay.

The good oul Urban Dictionary says it’s from when “Dubliners used to love the Queen so much” that a Jackeen is “known by the rest of us true Irish people as Jackeens.”

Well, we’ve found the very best definition of this controversial word yet…

According to an article written by New York based The Dollar magazine in 1841, a jackeen is “a fellow who does very little for a living, and wants to do less.”
