Plans For Controversial Car Ban On North Quays Have Been Scrapped

If you pass through Eden Quay on your daily commute, you're probably aware of plans to ban cars from this area of the North Quays to facilitate increased public transport.

The controversial proposals were announced earlier this year and would see drivers restricted from turning right on to O'Connell Bridge or from driving on to Eden Quay.

The plans have now been revised due to strong opposition.

According to The Irish Times, motorists will be allowed to access Eden Quay but the O'Connell Bridge restriction is still to remain in place.

However, concerns have been raised that the U-turn could see the new Luas service stuck behind traffic in these areas.

Transport Committee chairman Ciaran Cuffe told The Irish Independent that he was worried that "trams and buses will end up stuck behind cars on Ellis Quay after we have spend €360m of taxpayers’ money joining up the two Luas lines".
