RTÉ's infamous show Republic of Telly has officially been cancelled to make way for a new comedy and entertainment series, which has not yet been named.

The extremely popular satirical showed aired for the final time in November 2016.

The show ran for 15 seasons spread along eight years, and rumours started to spread last year that the show was coming to an end. According to The Mirror, the decision to axe the show comes as RTÉ is under enormous financial pressure, making a loss of €20 million in 2016.

The national broadcaster has suffered financially due to the implications of Brexit, with more cuts are expected to be announced later in the year.

The replacement TV show will be announced in the coming months.
