Seagulls Force Popular Dublin Beach To Close For Third Time This Summer

The threat of seagulls taking over the world continues, with the latest closure of popular Sandymount Strand blamed on the strangely large birds.

The Irish Independent reports that Dublin City Council blames the water contamination that forced the beach to close on droppings from the huge number of seagulls in the area.

The strand has been closed twice this summer already, with sewage overspill from heavy rainfall the cause of the previous two closures.

Labour Cllr Dermot Lacey told The Irish Independent that the frequent closures were unacceptable saying:

"This is a beach just yards from where hundreds of thousands people live.

"It is an area that should be given massive attention to facilitate people, especially for those not going on holiday.

"I have called before for investment in the beach and it has never been given the priority it deserves.

Droppings of seabirds are known to interfere with water quality, and it's believed that the sand bar (the exposed ridge of sand) at Sandymount is attracting all the seagulls.
