Simon Coveney, the Minister for Housing, is set to officially open a new centre for the homeless on Sean McDermott Street in Dublin 1 today.

The building has been refurbished from a hostel with beds for 36 people into 18 one-bedroom apartments, in order to facilitate independent living for single people and couples alike.

According to figures released by the Dublin Region Homeless Executive yesterday, however, there are currently 913 homeless families in emergency accommodation.
