The Sad Story Of Bertie, Dublin’s Loneliest Swan – Help Us Reunite Him With His Friends

We are lucky enough to share this city with some wonderful animals, and the swans in our parks and canals seriously enhance our city.

Today we bring you an unusual story of the lone swan who is apparently stuck and can't seem to get back to his friends...

It all started when we got a worried message on our Facebook page, so we decided to investigate.

First thing this morning we headed down, and sure enough there he was on the bank of the canal between The Barge and Portobello bridge

He seems very forlorn - with his head bowed but friendly when approached

Locals have clearly spotted him and have been leaving out food

Meanwhile about 50 of his relatives and friends are on the other side of the bridge, mere yards away

The big problem, as you can see from this video, is that he needs to navigate a busy main road in order to be reunited with his pals

So we've been throwing this around the office all morning, and considering that we're not experts on swans, we thought we'd throw it out to you guys.

Has the swan chosen to leave his squad?
Did he got confused in some of the recent storms?
Is he just lost and too scared to go back over the bridge?
Can swans really die of a lonely heart?
Can an animal rescue charity get him back to his friends?

Either way, it seems that the poor guy has been on his own for weeks. Surely somebody out there can help us get a happy ending to this story? We decided to call this little cutie, Bertie.
