Dubliners are being warned that the 'well dressed scammer' is back. This is the third time in recent years that people have complained about the 'well dressed' person who preys on people, tugging at their heartstrings in order to get money off them.
This american was the first victim of WDS 3.0's latest scam and took to reddit to warn others not to fall for it:
"I can definitely say I was scammed by the same person - as this previous reddit thread shows. Today in Heuston Station, a young guy around 20-25 came up to me and said he had come into Dublin for the day to pick up a mountain bike, and had purchased a bus ticket back home. When he tried to get on with the bike, they told him he couldn't bring it on the bus and would have to take the train.
"The guy said he didn't bring any money with him because he was worried about getting pick-pocketed (classic scammer move), and didn't have enough to pay for a train ticket.
"He was short ten euro, and needed some cash to cover the difference. He gave me his email and said he would send whatever money I lent him over PayPal as soon as he got the chance.
"Being delirious from 5 hours of jet lag (I'm flew in from New York yesterday) I believed this credible sounding story, and gave him €20, since I didn't have change.
"After several hours of not receiving anything, I started looking into this guy. The email address he gave me maps to the name Claude Cash. After a quick google search, I found similar sounding stories.
"It seems like this asshat (apparently this is an insult in american) reuses the name Claude and sets up fake gmail and facebook accounts to make his stories more credible. From other posts, it sounds like he has told people he's from South Africa, which matches the facebook profile.
"As a New Yorker, it goes against all my instincts to give people money, but I genuinely thought I was doing someone a favor in this situation. Guess I was wrong! I just hope this message can save someone else from getting scammed out of more money by this asshole."
The Dublin scammer has previously blagged their way into staying in places for free as well as eating and drinking out for free, at other people's expenses.
