This Luas ‘Sign Mistake’ Turns The Irish Word For ‘Space’ Into An Insulting Word Instead

Darragh Berry

We’ve pointed out the importance of fadas before.

Take this Irish name for example. Orla with no fada on the ‘a’ means something completely different and disgusting compared to Órla which means something beautiful and girly.

So when it comes to fadas, you have to make sure that you put them in the right spot or make sure you don’t remove them.

That’s what happened on a Luas sign which talks about space in the “priority area.”

The English reads:

“‘Priority area’

However in the Irish version – as seen on Reddit – there should be a fada on the ‘a’ in the word ‘spas’.

The omission means the word actually says ‘spas’ which is a Dublin slang word for idiotic behaviour.
