Motorists who block the Luas Cross City line could face automatic fines and penalty points as the new automated 'red light' and yellow box junction cameras come into play in the capital.
According to The Irish Times, National Transport Authority (NTA) chief executive Anne Graham is hopeful that the cameras will come into affect and has said that if motorists do not obey traffic signals and block yellow box junctions, action will be taken.
The cameras were introduced on a pilot basis on a singular Luas Junction back in 2015 and were proved to be a success.
The cameras take photographs of vehicles entering the intersection when the light is red and drivers who break the red light will automatically receive three penalty points and a fine of up to €120.
The installation of the cameras would hopefully stop junctions being blocked by traffic which will in turn mean shorter and on time journeys.
Graham said that all motorists need to play their part and obey the rules: "Traffic patterns are going to have to change to accommodate the Luas Cross City. There will be a period of bedding down, particularly as full operations commence. As citizens of the city we all have to be aware that yellow boxes are put in place for a particular reason. There will probably be a level of enforcement needed to ensure that yellow boxes in particular are kept free so that traffic can move.”
