If the thought of rats gives you the creeps you're not going to like to hear this news.

According to Rentokil, Dublin is the most rat-infested county in Ireland.

Ireland's leading pest control provider reported this morning that our capital has the most rat infestations across the country.

Dublin is the home to almost a third of all rat infestations in Ireland and the company is warning that the number of rodent invasions will continue to rise this winter and multiply. Yikes!

Rentokil said that the recent drop in temperatures will encourage rodents to move indoors, so you might want to fix any cracks in your home and lock up.

The number of rats have increased by 38% between just July and September this year compared to last year.

Dublin topped the chart for the counties with the highest rat infestations in Ireland this year, standing at 32%.

Meanwhile Cork is in second place with 12% and Kildare in third with 8%.

Area Technical Manager of Rentokil Dr. Colm Moore said, "During winter months, rodents like to base themselves somewhere warm, quiet and close to a source of food.

"They can be very persistent and if rats gain access into your home or business they can spread disease, cause damage and contaminate food."

One pair of rats shed more than one-million body hairs each year and a single rat can leave up to 25,000 droppings.

Dr. Moore has advised people to "act quickly" to get rid of rats and to help prevent a large infestation.
