A Dublin man is facing murder charges in Italy after his wife disappeared during a Mediterranean cruise.

Daniel Belling, who is originally from Germany, was on holiday with his wife Xing Lei Li and their two children when staff aboard the Magnifica cruise noticed that they were missing one passenger.

Ms Li’s absence only came to light as passengers disembarked at the end of the cruise, with Mr Belling’s failure to raise the alarm prompting suspicion from police.

He was apprehended at Rome’s Ciampino airport and will be questioned by judges later today.

Mr Belling’s lawyer Luigi Conti told The Irish Independent that his client has a “perfectly good explanation” for what happened.
