Here’s How You Can Have A Laugh And Do Some Good This Week In Dublin

Born Optimistic, in conjunction with Aidlink, launch brand new night “WoW Women on Wednesdays” to showcase the best of female music, comedy and spoken word, and raise funds for girls’ rights and education projects in Kenya.

Launching this Wednesday, July 19 at 7pm in Whelans - WoW will feature performances from Eve Belle, Alicia Byrne Keane, NC Grey, Eve Darcy, Hvmmingbyrd & MC for the night will be the illustrious Sinéad Burke.   

Recognising the opportunity to promote, support and celebrate the wealth of talented women out there, Wow’s mission is to provide an entertaining, belter of a night for audiences, while raising much needed funds for charity.

In the spirit of female solidarity – Global North and Global South – all proceeds raised from WOW ticket sales will support Aidlink’s girls’ education projects in Kenya, tackling female genital mutilation (FGM), child marriage and gender inequality.  

So basically, WoW is asking you to give some time to yourself to have a deadly night and give some cash to others to allow them to have a better life. 

I'm in. But tell me this, what exactly is Aidlink?

Founded in Dublin in 1982, Aidlink is an Irish Charity working to improve the lives of people living in poverty in Africa. They do this by strengthening local organisations, enabling healthy and fulfilling lives and developing sustainable communities with the capacity, skills and knowledge to achieve change for themselves. 

Working in Kenya, Uganda and Ghana, their projects include building wells, constructing primary school sanitation facilities and training farmers and communities, all with a special focus on the rights and empowerment of women and girls. 

Amazing. And where does the money go?

Aidlink’s primary school programme in Kenya is a gendered intervention which aims to make school a happier, healthier and safer place for all children, but most especially for girls. Working with local partner The Girl Child Network, they work to achieve “girl-friendly” primary schools, which entails implementing better sanitation facilities, distributing sanitary pads, establishing and training child rights clubs and women’s groups, and providing gender sensitive training to parents and staff.
