Is Clery’s About To Be Turned Into The Next Guinness Storehouse?

It's been over a year since the iconic Dublin department store, Clery's, shut its doors – and further plans by its new owner, Natrium Ltd, have been revealed. 

The company – a joint venture between a London investment and hedge fund business and Irish property investor Deirdre Foley – has plans to convert the city centre landmark into a mixed-use development including retail, offices, a hotel and rooftop bars and restaurants. 

And now a senior planner from Dublin City Council has asked for the inclusion of a viewing platform offering a 360-degree panorama of Dublin city, according to 98FM.

It's not the first time O'Connell St has been the location of some ambitious planning – pre-recession, the former Carlton cinema site was the subject of a massive redevelopment that included a rooftop garden, an enormous shopping mall and a pedestrianised plaza.

But don't go mourning the old Clery's just yet – current plans include a restoration of the shop's original Tea Room stairs and, aside from anything else, Dublin City Council has to approve all applications before they go anywhere.

So, y'know, watch this space; we might see some movement around 2025...
