If you're currently on the market for an apartment in Dublin, be wary of a new scam that's currently doing the rounds.
The scam artist posts ads for unavailable properties and tries to appear authentic by sharing his driver licence and a picture of himself with his cat — both of which he has stolen from another individual.
The scam has come to light because the man whose picture and ID is being used has discovered his identity has been stolen and he has reported the crime to gardai. The victim unwittingly gave the con man his ID when the criminal had posed as a prospective tenant, asking for a picture of the victim's licence to prove he was legitimate.
According to Independent.ie, at least one fake advertisement was posted on Daft by the scammer for a three-bedroom property in Wilfield Park, Dublin 4. The con artist demands two months rent before, as well as a deposit, before the property can even be viewed.
Don't be caught out by scammers if you're on the house hunt in Dublin: never transfer money before viewing the property.
