New Student Accommodation In South Dublin Town Would Make It “Communist Europe”

Sarah

An Independent councillor has raised concerns over plans for a development of 300 apartments as student accommodation in Stillorgan.

Independent councillor Deirdre Donnelly told The Irish Independent that “there is no room for such a monstrosity in Stillorgan. The student accommodation looked austere and will no doubt dwarf the beautiful street that is The Hill.

“It would end up looking like something from former communist Europe.”

The development proposal by Cairn Homes includes retail and café units with outdoor terrace, co-working office space, community sports hall, a large civic space, public accessible park and public realm works.

The plans for the development were submitted to An Bord Pleanala earlier this year, and received more than 50 complaints, including the concern that the apartments were neglecting elderly people and young locals.

Cairn Homes states on their website that: “The proposed development will deliver much needed student accommodation and residential housing units together”…”which will enhance Stillorgan village.”

“A key requirement for the design of the development was that it responded appropriately to its location while respecting the amenity and character of the neighbouring streets.”
