Looking for something to do today that takes you out of the city, but not keen on the idea of spending more than two hours in the car? We’ve got you covered.
Day trips are meant to be easy, breezy and loads of fun, and that’s exactly the sort of list we’ve comprised. There’s something for everyone in here, from history lovers to shopaholics – so we hope we’ve inspired you to spread your wings a little and take a trip outside of our beloved capital.

1. Glendalough
Arguably one of the most beautiful spots in the whole of Ireland, a favourite with locals and tourists alike. Just a quick trip outside of Dublin, and you’re in absolute paradise.
No car? No problem.
2. Kilkenny
Kilkenny is the charming little city you’ve been waiting for. A plethora of places to eat and drink, a stellar castle and some really beautiful surroundings.
Kilkenny also has incredible nightlife, for those of you who want to turn your day trip into a weekend away. Which you will want after spending the day in this. Just, FYI.
3. Howth
Howth is known for beautiful food, incredible houses and even more fantastic views. A feast for the senses if there ever was one, Howth is everything you could want from a day trip.
Not too far away, dozens of great food and drinks spots and atmosphere that could be bottled, Howth is the perfect choice when you have a day to spare.
4. Kildare Village
Only 40 minutes on the motorway from Dublin, Kildare Village is a haven for anyone looking to pick up some good clothes at a cheap price. The perfect place to shop and feel like a celeb, on a non-celeb budget.
They’ve recently opened a whole load of new stores on top of their already impressive selection, and The Village also boasts some pretty slick restaurants and coffee spots. Definitely worth the spin.
5. Newgrange and Tara
Ireland’s royal county, Meath, was once a province all on its own – and it’s not hard to see why when you take into consideration all it has to offer.
500 years older than the pyramids, Newgrange is an absolute must for anyone with a penchant for history. Discover more about Ireland’s premier royal family here and in Tara, where the high kings of Ireland once sat.
6. Powerscourt Estate
Powerscourt Estate and Gardens is well worth the short trip from Dublin. The stunning surroundings make a short task of walking, especially if the weather is in any way decent.
The estate itself has in its possession some truly gorgeous Japanese gardens, complete with grotto, lakes, walled garden and rose beds. An ideal spot to get some fresh air and immerse yourself in nature.
7. The K Club
The K Club is one of Kildare’s finer fixtures, boasting a Ryder Cup worthy golf course, a sensational, yet reasonably priced, restaurant and bar, and grounds that are fit for a king. A perfect spot to spend the evening meandering, or even to go get a facial in their award winning spa, if you feel the urge.
You might even spot Notorious himself, as he’s just purchased a house on the property.
8. Trim Castle
Located in the beautiful town of Trim, County Meath, Trim Castle is a four star hotel situated in the awe-inspiring site of the historic castle grounds.
Located only 40 minutes from Dublin City Centre, the location of Trim will capture the imagination of each and every visitor and is a perfect retreat from the hustle and bustle of the city centre.
With four of the best Irish golf courses in Ireland located nearby, magnificent views, wonderful restaurants, heritage tours and a town centre location, this Meath hotspot seems to tick every box and would be wholly enjoyed by everyone who gets the chance to visit.
9. The Rock of Cashel
Cashel is home to the internationally famed Rock of Cashel. It’s one of the most spectacular tourist attractions in Ireland and one of the most visited.
The rich history of Cashel is reflected in its built heritage, from prehistoric raths to medieval monasteries and fortified town houses, as well as a Georgian cathedral and a 21st century library (which holds regular exhibitions, workshops and concerts).

10. Coastal DART trip
Get a view of the most beautiful parts of Dublin, by taking the most scenic of all scenic routes – a coastal trip along the DART. Explore the east coast in great detail, and at the comfort of Dublin’s best loved rail system.
Along the line, there are a number of things to do: such as grabbing a Teddy’s from Dun Laoghaire, the cliff walk from Bray to Greystones and tuck in to some cracking fish and chips in Howth. The possibilities are endless when you buy a day ticket for the DART.
11. Carlingford
Yet another breath-taking spot to take in the world, just an hour outside of Dublin. Aren’t you spoiled for choice?
Carlingford, County Louth’s mountainous and sea landscape is steeped in mystery, history and mythology, so much so that it provided the inspiration for The Chronicles of Narnia by CS Lewis.
The area has been awarded the prestigious European Destination of Excellence award, and if all that doesn’t persuade you to go, then you’re stone cold crazy.
