There’s nothing worse than failing at the final hurdle.
Like the gymnast who does all the somersaults correctly, spins 100 feet into the air and pulls off moves that the judges have never seen before, only to feck up the landing and fall on their arse.
Or the football team that keep overcoming the odds, getting to football final after football final, only to be beaten on the day by one point in the dying minutes – Mayo, pls stop doing this to me x.
Leo Varadkar tried his hand at some Irish on Wednesday night in a tweet. Throwing your hand at Irish when you’re not completely fluent is a tricky one because you know that there’s going to be Gaelgores looking out for even the tiniest of mistakes – like a fada for example.
The Taoiseach was close too, he nailed the past tense, he was spot on with the plural for pupils and an Irish name got in his way and ruined the party.
Bhí sé go hiontach bualadh le chuid dos na daltaí ag Coláiste Niamh Eoin Inis Meáin inniú. Tá daltaí ann atá ina cainteoirí ó dúchas agus cuid eile acu a thagann ó aiteanna eagsula ar fud an mórthír chin Gaeilge a fhoghlaim. pic.twitter.com/ZfHtM768bG

“Bhí sé go hiontach bualadh le chuid dos na daltaí ag Coláiste Niamh (should be naomh) Eoin Inis Meáin inniú. Tá daltaí ann atá ina cainteoirí ó dúchas agus cuid eile acu a thagann ó aiteanna eagsula ar fud an mórthír chin Gaeilge a fhoghlaim.”
Roughly translates as:
“It was great to meet the two students at Eoin College in Inis Meáin today. There are students here who are native speakers and others from different parts of the mainland who come to learn Irish.
Of course, the fluent speakers were out in force and when one commenter said with surprise “I thought Leo couldn’t speak Irish”, they were quick to chime in with “he can’t, there’s a mistake in his tweet.”
So close, so far away Leo.
