PICS: A New Baby Elephant Was Born In Dublin Zoo And She’s Adorable

Sarah

Baby animals are the BEST – this is a fact that we all know to be 110% true, so when we see new pics of newborn animals we honestly cry tears of joy and appreciations for all things adorable.

Which is why we were thrilled to hear the news that our very own Dublin Zoo welcomed a li’l female Asian elephant calf to their herd on Monday, and she is already stealing the show with her hairy ears and wobbly trunk.

Proud momma elephant Dina, who is the herd’s matriarch, gave birth to her bundle of joy after a loooong 22-month gestation.

The baby calf is already pretty hefty, at an estimated 1 metre tall, and weighing 80kg.

The new arrival is Dina’s third calf and the fifth elephant calf born at Dublin Zoo in less than three years – a significant success for Dublin Zoo as part of the international breeding programme established to assist the survival of the Asian elephant.

It is estimated that only 30,000 to 60,000 of these animals exist in the wild, so this new little baba is a real treat.

Gerry Creighton, Operations Manager at Dublin Zoo said, “We are delighted with the new arrival and happy to report that both mum and calf are doing great. The calf is feeding exceptionally well and has settled into her surroundings seamlessly.

“This is Dina’s third calf and so naturally, she has developed excellent maternal instincts over the years. We are very proud of the expanding herd and recognise the significance of these births for the future of endangered Asian elephants.”

Beautiful – we don’t deserve you sweet baby animals.
