Aldi Stores Ltd. is recalling a batch of its Skellig Bay mackerel fillets due to elevated levels of histamine.
Although the affected batch is passed its ‘use by date’, consumers may have still have this batch in their freezers as the label indicates that the product is suitable for home freezing.
Consumers who have the implicated batch frozen at home are advised not to eat it.
The product in its entirety is Skelling Bay Mackeral Fillets, pack size: 300g, approval number IE LO 0002 EC.
The Batch Code is ‘Use by date’: 30/06/17.
Symptoms of histamine toxicity (Scombroid poisoning) typically begin within 5 – 30 minutes of eating the spoiled product.
Symptoms include:
- Flushing of the face and body
- Nausea
- Burning in the mouth
- Headache
- Faintness, sometimes with blurring vision
- Abdominal cramps
- Diarrhoea
- Wheezing or other breathing problems
- Swelling of the face and tongue
While symptoms typically last a few hours or a day, in rare cases, symptoms can persist for a few days. Those affected are being asked to attend their GP immediately.
