The 7 Worst Rooms To Rent In Dublin City Right Now

The Dublin housing situation has been pretty disastrous for the past few years – with landlords capitalising on the “end of recession” by jacking up rents, taking advantage of the sheer number of students and workers looking to live in the city centre.

It doesn’t help that Dublin city has some fairly fucking ridiculous restrictions on high-rises, so there’s never been the option to build modern apartment blocks that might accommodate more than a few hundred people. 

Add to that the influx of students to the city in just a few weeks, and things are at serious crisis point. But how bad can it really be? We took to Daft.ie to see if we could find a decent room to rent in the city without going bankrupt, and here’s just a handful of what we found…

1. For €305, share a D1 bedroom with three other people

This isn’t a case of snobbery; the Northside has a lot of gems, but Summerhill Parade is – thus far – not one of them. 

If it helps, the rent includes wifi, bins and a cleaner who comes once a week – probably just as well, because you’ll be sharing the flat with seven other people (three of whom will be sleeping in your room).

2. Got €700? You’ll get a single bedroom on Kings Inns St

You’ll get all mod cons, the option to rent a parking space and a desk in your room. Oh – but you’ll have to be out at weekends, and you’ll be sharing with the landlord. So that’s €700 for around 20 days a month. 

3. €350 a month for a shared room in a 5-person apt

There are already four guys in their early 30s living in this apartment on Parnell St, and you’ll be sharing a bedroom with one of them. Bills are a mere €35, but be warned – there are strict rules about cleanliness.

4. €300 a month for a shared bedroom, en suite

We’re back in Dublin 1 with this gem – a shared bedroom at €300 a month, in an apartment that’s designed for… Well, it’s hard to tell. One person? A gnome? It’s a short-term let, from September-December, in a “temporary single bed”. Think of it as camping! Fun!

5. €240 a month to share a four-person room

Location is key for this city-centre gem at the top of Capel St, where you’ll be sharing a room with three others – two girls and a guy – with another housemate somewhere (presumably getting a better deal). 

6. €480 a month to share with seven people

But don’t despair; you get “complimentary wifi” and “complimentary use of the washing and drying facilities” in these Dublin 1 rentals. You’ll be sharing a twin room with one other – meaning the shared room has a price of €960 a month – and couples are accepted, which is actually a bit of a rarity. 

7. €312 a month for a bunkbed in Dublin 1

It’s not just your bunkbed, obviously; you’ll be sharing a room with an indeterminate number of others, and the apartment itself sleeps five.

It’s not all bad news, though; if you’re willing to pay €1,000+ a month to share an apartment, you can get something semi-decent – and if you’re a landlord? Well, you’re laughing all the way to the bank.
