A Luas Tram Is Being Filled With Gifts For The Homeless Today

Kiara Keane

The annual Fill A Luas Christmas Shoebox Appeal is well underway at Connolly Station and it looks like it’s already been huge success.

Inner City Helping Homeless and Transdev have come together for their fourth year in a row to organise a gift drive that provides rough sleepers in the city with much-needed essentials such as toiletries and clothing.

Thanks to its huge success in previous years, it’s now being extended so people will have an entire week to donate a shoebox.

A Fill A Luas event is running at the Connolly Luas stop from 7am to 7pm today, where volunteers will be offering free meals and haircuts to the homeless all day, and there will also be a Santa’s grotto and buskers performing throughout the day.

Fill A Luas Week is running until tomorrow and people can also leave their shoeboxes at the Luas depots in Red Cow and Broombridge today until 5pm and tomorrow from 9am to 5pm.

If you can’t make it to those locations, they can be donated at the ICHH offices until 11pm tonight and from 10am to 11pm tomorrow.

If you’d like to donate, they’re looking for shoeboxes to be filled with things like socks, underwear, hats, scarves, gloves, wrapped sweets, chocolates, Christmas cards and toiletries.

If you’d like to donate a shoebox to a homeless child, make sure you specify the age it’s intended for and include things like a small toy, a book, hat, gloves, scarf, Christmas card, McDonald’s voucher or a Smyths Toys voucher.

People are being asked not to include perishable food, aerosols, perfumes, aftershave, mouth wash or hand sanitiser.

You can find more information on the Shoebox Appeal and a full list of drop-off points around the city via the ICHH website here.
