If you grew up in a certain region of the northside, chances are you would have enjoyed a drink outside The Gravediggers in Glasnevin.
John Kavanagh’s pub, which colloquially goes by its alternate name due to its proximity to Glasnevin Cemetery, has been standing since 1833. The establishment well-loved for its unique atmosphere, helped largely by its lack of TVs, radios and, of course, its unreal pint of the black stuff.
The Gravediggers is also a popular spot for those who like to enjoy their drink outdoors and people have been doing so for years, with many spilling over to Prospect Square across the road.
Well, that activity is now a thing of the past as the pub has now put up a notice indicating that the Gardaí are asking customers not to consume drinks on the street or on the green area in front of the premises.

The end of an era and a practice that will be particularly missed during the warm summer months. However, The Gravediggers is certainly not short on reasons to stop in, whether it’s for its memorable chats with staff and clientele, fine selection of drinks or unreal food, as referred to in this piece we posted a while ago.
While all of Dublin’s best pubs have gone through some sort of change, the charm will never really leave them.
